Advanced Nutrients got a makeover! The brand recently changed all of their labels. While updating our website with the new “look”, I was reminded on how many great things Advanced Nutrients has to offer. Changing the pictures took me twice as long because I couldn’t help but re-look at products, read about what they do and remember how much I love them! It reminded me of trying to organize a memory box and instead spending hours looking at old photos, reading old notes and reminiscing. Not cleaning your plants can lead to a "pesky" infestation.

If you are anything like the average person, your list of housekeeping chores can seem endless. From bathrooms to bedrooms, mopping to vacuuming, keeping a clean and tidy house can be a full time job. So, you are probably not overly enthusiastic at the thought of adding plant washing to the already time-consuming list of chores. BUT, adding this task could be the task that saves your hydroponics garden.

Ignoring your plant washing duties can cause many problems for your hydroponics garden. One of the most common effects of leaf washing negligence is an infestation of spider mites. Spider mites are small bugs that will turn a thriving crop into a dry and dead one.  Spider mites flourish in warm and dry climates. Once they arrive they pierce single leaf cells of the plants and suck out the contents, causing the plant cells to collapse and die. Initially, spider mite infestations will cause speckled browning on the plants’ leaves and the undersides of the leaves may become yellow and crusty. But, as the infestation worsens the spider mites will remove most of the chlorophyll, which makes the leaves crumple, die and fall off.

A Spider mite infestation is an undesirable situation and can ruin the hard work you have put into creating a prosperous indoor garden. Halloween is just days away and by now the patches have been visited, the perfect pumpkin has been chosen, and those orange gourds have been carved. For many the sight of those pumpkin patches popping up in local parking lots create a festive excitement for what’s to come on the 31^st of October. For others, they create nostalgia, as we are taken back to the childhood routine of visiting a real pumpkin patch and picking out the perfect pumpkin. But, either way, the pumpkin patch has always been a cornerstone of the American Halloween.

What many don’t know is that the traditional pumpkin patch is now accompanied by a modern and environmentally friendly counterpart: “The Hydroponics Pumpkin Patch”. Across the country hydroponic growers have transformed the way we pick out pumpkins and have begun to grow pumpkins in their very own indoor gardens. Using the basics of any standard hydroponics system, pumpkins are on the long list of vegetables that have been hydroponically grown. The popularity of using a hydroponics system for growing is spreading rapidly throughout the United States. In fact, Plant Yampa in Moffat County, Colorado just received a grant of $50,000 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to use for the expansion of their hydroponic greenhouse complex. However, the success and increased popularity of Hydroponics is prevalant beyond the U.S. Borders. Hydroponics is traveling the globe and showing its producers just how successful it can be!

Pater Broerson, a Dutch grower, was the first person to grow lettuce in water in the outdoors. Broerson’s new methods are saving the environment, but also helping him. Since using the new system, his production has multiplied by 8 times!

This summer in Bahrain, work started for the creation of a major training center for hydroponics gardens. The new center, which will offer regular free workshops on growing with hydroponics systems, is being created to help encourage more green areas in the largely concrete kingdom.

Italy is also able to claim a “hydroponics first”. Just this summer, Giannengelo Boccuzzi from Bari, Italy grew the 1st ever Black Magic Grape using a hydroponics system. Not only did the grape look good, but it tasted sweeter than ever!

Tokyo, Japan’s financial district is known for its fast-paced business and towering skyscrapers. However, amongst all that hustle and bustle there is actually a 1,000 sq. meter farm. Surprising? Yes it is!  Located in a basement of a former bank vault, this hydroponics garden grows over 100 different types of crops. Talk about an underground surprise!

Toronto has so many people with homegrown hydroponics gardens, that they are able to have their own expo. The “Homegrown Hydroponics Expo” on October 30 in Toronto offers people a chance to learn from experts at informational seminars, try an abundance of free samples, eat great, homegrown food, and preview exciting new hydroponics products.
